Die Offenbarung

Er war alt an Jahren, sogar sehr alt. Ein Gerücht hatte sich verbreitet, dass er nicht sterben würde. Er überlebte die Mutter seines Herrn, für die er sorgte, und er lebte länger als seine engsten Weggefährten, die anderen Jünger, die allesamt an einem gewaltsamen Martyrium starben. Er wurde als Apostel der Liebe bezeichnet, weil ihm die Bruderliebe in seinen Briefen so wichtig war und er beim letzten Abendmahl an der Brust Jesu lag. In seinem Evangelium über das Fleisch gewordene, ewige Wort Gottes sprach der Jünger, den Jesus lieb hatte, von sich selbst in der dritten Person, weil er nie ein großes Aufheben um sich machte. Und doch war er der aufrichtigste und bedeutendste Leiter der Gemeinden in Kleinasien. Er war einer der letzten Augenzeugen, der das Wort des Lebens gehört, gesehen und betastet hatte. Seine persönlichen Berichte waren voller Kraft; einer Kraft des Heiligen Geistes, die von Sünden überführte und Kranke heil machte. Trotz aller weltlichen Verbote hörte er nicht auf, den Missionsauftrag seines himmlischen Meisters zu befolgen. Deshalb landete er bei wahrhaftigen Gewalttätern auf der Gefangeneninsel Patmos. Ungeachtet oder vielleicht gerade wegen all der widrigen Umstände ging der Prophet seiner Gewohnheit nach am Sabbat ins Gebet. Jochanan war im Begriff die größte Offenbarung der Menschheitsgeschichte zu empfangen. Die Offenbarung des Johannes ist das letzte, schwierigste und umstrittenste Buch der Bibel. Über keine andere Prophetie gibt es so viele verschiedene Auslegungen und Theorien. Am besten wir lassen den Autor sprechen und beginnen mit seiner Einleitung:

Offenbarung Jesu Christi, die Gott ihm gab, um seinen Knechten zu zeigen was bald geschehen muss; und indem er seinen Engel sandte, hat er sie seinem Knecht Johannes kundgetan, der das Wort Gottes und das Zeugnis Jesu Christi bezeugt hat, alles, was er sah. Glückselig ist, der die Worte der Weissagung liest und die sie hören und bewahren, was darin geschrieben steht; denn die Zeit ist nahe.

Die Apokalypse (Griechisch: Apokalypsis=Enthüllung) ist nicht wie in manchen Überschriften behauptet die Offenbarung des Johannes, sondern die Enthüllung von Jesus Christus!

So entstanden Missverständnisse bereits durch die Einführung der ersten Manuskripte. Die Offenbarung Jesu Christi wurde zunächst von Gott an Jesus selbst gegeben, der sie dann durch seinen Engel Johannes übermittelt hat.

Die ersten Christen, die die Worte hören und bewahren sollten, wurden von Petrus schon belehrt, dass keine Weissagung der Schrift aus eigener Deutung geschah, oder durch den Willen eines Menschen hervorgebracht wurde, sondern von Gott her redeten Menschen getrieben vom Heiligen Geist (2. Petrus 1 Verse 20 u. 21).

Johannes könnte hierzu nicht deutlicher sprechen als in Offenbarung Kapitel 1 Verse 10 und 11:

Ich war an dem Tag des Herrn im Geist, und ich hört hinter mir eine laute Stimme wie von einer Posaune, die sprach: Was du siehst schreibe in ein Buch und sende es den sieben Gemeinden…

Johannes ist für mich keinesfalls ein Psychopath der eigene Hirngespinste über den Untergang der Welt verbreitete, denn die 22 Kapitel der Offenbarung fügen sich nahtlos in den Kanon der 65 restlichen Bücher der Bibel ein. Meine folgenden Erklärungen zur Apokalypse sollen den Leser ermuntern, sich selbst mit dem Ehrfurcht einflößenden Geschichtswerk auseinander zu setzen. Denn es ist seine Geschichte (History), die Erzählung vom Alpha und Omega, vom Lamm Gottes und Löwe von Juda.

The Revelation

He was old in years, in fact very old. A rumour had spread that he would not die. He survived the mother of his Lord, for whom he had cared, and he lived longer than his companions, the other disciples, who all died of a violent martyrdom. He was known as the apostle of love. Brotherly love was so important to him that he repeatedly wrote about it in his letters, and of course he was the one who lay at the breast of Jesus during the last supper. In his gospel about the eternal word of God which became flesh, the disciple whom Jesus loved spoke on his behalf in the third person, for he never wanted to exalt himself. And yet he was the sincerest and most important leader of the churches in Asia Minor. He was one of the last witnesses who had heard, seen, and touched the word of life. His personal reports were full of strength – a power of the Holy Spirit, which convicted of sins and healed the sick. Despite all worldly bans he did not stop to obey the Great Commission of his Heavenly Master. Therefore, he was forced to join violent criminals on the prison island of Patmos. Despite, or perhaps because of all the adverse circumstances, the prophet went by habit on the Sabbath to prayer. Yohanan was about to receive the biggest revelation of human history. The Book of Revelation is the last, most difficult, and most controversial book of the Bible. There are so many different interpretations and theories about no other prophecy. Best, the author John speaks himself, starting with his introduction:

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

The Apocalypse (Greek: apokalupsis = revelation, unveiling) is not as claimed in some headings the „Revelation of John“, but it is the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

Thus, misunderstandings were already created by the introduction of the early manuscripts. The Revelation of Jesus Christ was first given by God to Jesus himself, and then submitted through his angel to John.

The first Christians who should hear and keep the words were already taught from Peter that no prophecy of Scripture comes from our own interpretation or is produced by the will of man, but holy men spake under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1 verses 20 and 21).

John is clearly confirming this as he writes in Revelation Chapter 1 verses 10 and 11:

I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, what thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia …

In my view, John is not a psychopath who spreads his own fantasies about the end of the world. The 22 chapters of the Book of Revelation fit perfectly in the canon of the 65 remaining books of the Bible. My following explanations of the Apocalypse should encourage the reader to deal with the awe-inspiring body of history. Because it is his story (history), the story of the Alpha and Omega, the Lamb of God, and the Lion of Judah.
