Und dem Engel der Gemeinde in Sardes schreibe: Dies sagt der, der die sieben Geister Gottes und die sieben Sterne hat: Ich kenne deine Werke, du hast den Namen, dass du lebst, und bist doch tot. Wach auf und stärke das Übrige, das im Begriff stand zu sterben! Denn ich habe deine Werke nicht als vollkommen befunden vor meinem Gott. So denke nun daran, wie du empfangen und gehört hast, und bewahre es und tue Buße! Wenn du aber nicht wachen wirst, werde ich kommen wie ein Dieb, und du wirst nicht wissen, zu welcher Stunde ich über dich kommen werde. Aber du hast einige wenige Namen in Sardes, die ihre Kleider nicht besudelt haben; und sie werden mit mir wandeln in weißen Kleidern, denn sie sind es wert. Wer überwindet, der wird mit weißen Kleidern bekleidet werden, und ich werde seinen Namen aus dem Buch des Lebens nicht auslöschen und seinen Namen bekennen vor meinem Vater und vor seinen Engeln. Wer ein Ohr hat, der höre, was der Geist den Gemeinden sagt!
Und dem Engel der Gemeinde in Philadelphia schreibe: Das sagt der Heilige, der Wahrhaftige, der den Schlüssel Davids hat, der öffnet, und niemand wird schließen, und schließt, und niemand wird öffnen: Ich kenne deine Werke. Siehe, ich habe vor dir eine Tür aufgetan und niemand kann sie schließen; denn du hast eine kleine Kraft und hast mein Wort bewahrt und hast meinen Namen nicht verleugnet. Siehe, ich gebe Leute aus der Synagoge des Satans, von denen, die sich Juden nennen und es nicht sind, sondern lügen; siehe, ich werde sie dahin bringen, dass sie kommen und sich niederwerfen vor deinen Füßen und erkennen, dass ich dich geliebt habe. Weil du das Wort vom standhaften Ausharren auf mich bewahrt hast, werde auch ich dich bewahren vor der Stunde der Versuchung, die über den ganzen Erdkreis kommen wird, um die zu versuchen, die auf der Erde wohnen. Siehe, ich komme bald. Halte fest, was du hast, damit niemand deine Krone nehme! Wer überwindet, den will ich zu einer Säule im Tempel meines Gottes machen, und er wird nie mehr hinausgehen; und ich will auf ihn den Namen meines Gottes schreiben und den Namen der Stadt meines Gottes, des neuen Jerusalem, das aus dem Himmel herabkommt von meinem Gott aus, und meinen neuen Namen. Wer ein Ohr hat, der höre, was der Geist den Gemeinden sagt!
Und dem Engel der Gemeinde in Laodizea schreibe: Das sagt, der “Amen” heißt, der treue und wahrhaftige Zeuge, der Anfang der Schöpfung Gottes: Ich kenne deine Werke, dass du weder kalt noch heiß bist. Ach, dass du kalt oder heiß wärest! Weil du aber lau bist und weder heiß noch kalt, werde ich dich ausspeien aus meinem Mund. Denn du sprichst: Ich bin reich und habe genug und brauche nichts! -und du erkennst nicht, dass du elend und erbärmlich bist, arm, blind und entblößt. Ich rate dir, von mir im Feuer geläutertes Gold zu kaufen, damit du reich wirst; und weiße Kleider, damit du bekleidet wirst und die Schande deiner Blöße nicht offenbar werde; und salbe deine Augen mit Augensalbe, damit du siehst. Alle, die ich lieb habe, überführe und züchtige ich. So sei nun eifrig und tue Buße! Siehe, ich stehe an der Tür und klopfe an. Wenn jemand meine Stimme hört und die Tür öffnet, zu dem werde ich hineingehen und mit ihm das Mahl halten und er mit mir. Wer überwindet, dem werde ich geben, mit mir auf meinem Thron zu sitzen, wie auch ich überwunden und mich mit meinem Vater auf seinen Thron gesetzt habe. Wer ein Ohr hat, höre, was der Geist den Gemeinden sagt!

 

Jesaja, der große alttestamentliche Prophet, der die meisten messianischen Prophezeiungen gab, beschrieb das Wesen von Jesus folgendermaßen:

Und auf ihm wird ruhen der Geist des Herrn, der Geist der Weisheit und des Verstandes, der Geist des Rates und der Kraft, der Geist der Erkenntnis und Furcht des Herrn.

Wollen wir wirklich darauf achten was Jesus durch den Heiligen Geist den Gemeinden sagt? Sind wir laut Lukas 8, 21 die wahren Brüder, die das Wort hören und auch tun?

Die Einführung an die Gemeinde in Sardes ist hart: Du bist doch tot. Wach auf!

Viele Menschen sind als Baby getaufte Namenschristen, aber sie haben die Erfahrung der neuen Geburt aus Johannes 3, 3 nie gemacht. Der Heilige Geist ist gekommen, um von Sünde zu überführen und gemäß Jesaja 40 war die Stimme eines Rufenden (in Gestalt Johannes des Täufers) der Wegbereiter für das Lamm Gottes, dass die Sünden der Welt hinweg nimmt. Alles Fleisch ist wie das Gras und alles seine Anmut wie die Blume des Feldes. Wir verdorren und verwelken, aber das Wort des Herrn besteht in Ewigkeit. Paulus ergänzt in Römer 7, 18: „Denn ich weiß, dass in mir, das ist in meinem Fleisch, nichts Gutes wohnt; denn das Wollen ist in mir vorhanden, aber das Vollbringen des Guten nicht.“

Die Christen in Sardes hatten einen guten Namen, trotzdem waren ihre Werke nicht vollkommen. Selbstgerechtigkeit und Selbstsicherheit können tödlich sein, denn Jesus betonte immer wieder, dass er kommt, wenn wir nicht damit rechnen, so wie ein Dieb in der Nacht.

Die Furcht des Herrn ist der Beginn aller Weisheit und Erkenntnis des allein Heiligen ist Einsicht (Sprüche 9, 10). Neben dem Aufruf zur Buße lautet die Weisung zu bedenken, was wir empfangen und gehört haben und dies zu bewahren. Positiv vermerkt sind die wenigen Namen der gerechten Gläubigen, die ihre Kleider nicht beschmutzt haben und es wert sind in weißen Kleidern zu wandeln. Das schlimmste Schicksal ereilt die törichten Christen, die aus dem Buch des Lebens ausgelöscht werden, weil sie Jesus nicht öffentlich bekannt und sich um ihre Nächsten nicht gekümmert haben. Traurig am Sardes-Sendschreiben macht mich weiter, dass das Lob so gering ausfällt und jeder sich angesprochen fühlen sollte.

Historisch betrachtet gibt es wiederum jede Menge Anspielungen auf tatsächliche Ereignisse der lydischen Hauptstadt. Die Bergfeste Akropolis galt als uneinnehmbar und wurde dennoch zweimal wegen Nachlässigkeiten von den Feinden erobert. Sardes, die Großmacht Kleinasiens, war berühmt durch die ersten Münzprägungen, den Reichtum des Gold tragenden Flusses Paktolos und Krösus, des großzügigen Lyderkönigs. Monumentale Bauten wie der Artemistempel, das Gymnasion und die angeschlossene Synagoge sind bis heute eine Besichtigungstour wert. Und doch verblasste aller Glanz und Reichtum ab dem 14. Jahrhundert zum öden Ort. Bereits 17 n. Chr. wurde Sardes durch ein verheerendes Erdbeben verwüstet und konnte nur wegen finanzieller Hilfen von Kaiser Tiberius mit seinen Steuererlassen und 10.000.000 Sesterzen wieder aufgebaut werden. Gemäß Lukas 16, 13 können wir nicht Gott dienen und dem Mammon. Darum sollten wir darauf achten unser Haus auf den Felsen, und nicht auf Sand zu bauen, sowie unser Vertrauen nicht wegzuwerfen, weil es eine große Belohnung hat.

Am Liebsten nehmen die Christen, die Botschaft an die Gemeinde von Philadelphia an, da sie durchweg positiv ist und keine Rüge beinhaltet. Der Name der Stadt Philadelphia bedeutet brüderliche Liebe und begründetet sich auf die Loyalität von Attalus II. gegenüber seinem älteren, legitimen Bruder Eumenes II.. Die als Tor des Ostens bekannte Verbindungsstadt zwischen Europa und Kleinasien wurde wegen ihrer schönen Gebäude kleines Athen genannt, aber ebenso wie das naheliegende Sardes häufig von Erdbeben erschüttert. Eine Gemeinsamkeit mit der untadeligen Gemeinde von Smyrna besteht in den sich für gläubig haltenden Juden, die aber lügen, weil sie dem Satan dienen. Der erste Johannesbrief beschreibt treffend in Kapitel 4 Vers 19: „Wenn jemand sagt er liebt Gott, aber hasst seinen Bruder, dann ist er ein Lügner“, und Jesus warnte in der Bergpredigt davor, seinen Bruder als Dummkopf zu bezeichnen, da das zu erwartende Gericht Höllenfeuer bringt.

Im Gegensatz zu den anderen Sendschreiben beginnt die Einleitung nicht mit einer Wiederholung eines Merkmals aus der Vision von Kapitel 1, sondern mit dem, der heilig und wahrhaftig ist und die Schlüssel Davids hält.

Jesus sonderte sich zu Beginn seines öffentlichen Wirkens 40 Tage für eine Zeit des Gebets und Fastens in der Wüste aus, aber er widerstand jeder Versuchung. Er ist der einzige Mensch ohne Sünde und will, dass wir seinem Beispiel folgend in Heiligkeit wandeln. Er ist der Weg und die Wahrheit und das Leben (Johannes 14, 6), der der wahrhaftig ist. Jeder Mensch der das selbe von sich behauptet ist ein Lügner, Dieb und wird letztendlich zum Zerstörer. Nachdem so viele falsche Retter und Wiederchristusse aufgetreten sind, folgte der Täuschung immer wieder die Enttäuschung. Der einzige Schlüssel ist Jesus, der Messias, der Sohn Davids, dessen vermeintlich unterschiedliche Geschlechterlinie in den Evangelien (Maria und Josef, beide aus dem Stamme Judah) dennoch eine von vielen prophetischen Erfüllungen des Alten Bundes ist. Die Verheißung des Öffnens einer Tür bezieht sich im Neuen Testament auf die Verkündigung des Evangeliums (Kolosser 4, 3 und 2. Korinther 2, 12). Das Evangelium wird jedem Volk, Stamm und Nation gepredigt und dann wird das Ende kommen. In der Erfüllung diesen Werkes hatten die Christen in Philadelphia nur eine kleine Kraft und verdienen sich trotzdem die Anerkennung, das Wort bewahrt und den Namen Jesus nicht verleugnet zu haben. Es gab und gibt viele gehorsamen Botschafter an Christi statt, die ohne Engelserscheinungen, Zeichen und Wunder treu im Glauben an den unsichtbaren Vater im Himmel ihren Dienst ausgeführt haben und so als Könige die Lebenskrone erben. Wer danach trachtet, Gottes Willen zu tun und das Königreich Gottes sucht, wird von der Stunde der Versuchung bewahrt bleiben. Ein altbekannter Horror für die Leute aus der mehrmals umbenannten Stadt Philadelphia setzte wiederum ein, wenn die Erde stark zu beben begann, so dass ihre Häuser abermals einstürzten und sie ins Freie flüchten mussten. Welch großer Trost bedeutete in diesem Zusammenhang die Verheißung für die Christen zu einer Säule im Tempel zu werden, nie mehr herausgehen zu müssen und einen neuen Namen im neuen Jerusalem zu bekommen.

Außergewöhnlich an der sechsten Station in Kleinasien ist, dass die christliche Gemeinde in Philadelphia bis zum Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts überdauert hat und die sechstgrößte Stadt der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, die in der Werbung als Kraft-Namensgeber eines himmlischen Frischkäses fungiert, 1682 vom Quäker William Penn (Pennsylvannia), als christliche Kolonie gegründet, den selben Namen bekam.

Das Beste kommt zum Schluss, sollte man meinen, da Jesus bei der endenden Hochzeitsfeier zu Kana im schönen Galiläa den besten Wein in sechs großen Gefäßen auftischen ließ, und mit dem Pfingstfest bei der Urgemeinde in Jerusalem eine nie dagewesene Ausgießung des Heiligen Geistes in Form von feurigen Zungen und eines mächtigen Brausens vom Himmel stattfinden ließ. Gerade in lebendigen charismatischen Kreisen wird gelehrt, dass die größte Erweckung der Menschheitsgeschichte durch die Ausbreitung eines weltweiten Feuers bevorsteht, denn die Ernte ist groß, aber der Arbeiter wenige. Leicht werden dabei die warnenden Worte aus der Endzeitrede von Jesus in Matthäus Kapitel 24 über Täuschung, Bedrängnis, Verführung und Abfall übersehen, und so steht auch bei der finalen Gemeinde in Laodizea eine Warnung im Vordergrund. Jesus ist das große Wort „So sei es – Amen“, der allein treue und wahrhaftige Zeuge, der den Anfang kennt und das Ende. Laodizea war eine hochentwickelte Stadt, die berühmt war für ihr Banksystem, die Kleidungsindustrie und einer wirksamen Augensalbe. Die natürliche Schwäche in der Infrastruktur bestand in der künstlichen Wasserzufuhr, denn das kilometerlange Kanäle zurücklegende Nass wurde mit der Zeit unappetitlich. Welche unangenehme Vorstellung ist es von Jesu Munde wieder ausgespien zu werden, wie lauwarmes Wasser. Der Grund ist zu sagen, dass wir reich sind und nichts bedürfen, ohne zu wissen, dass wir elend, bemitleidenswert, arm, blind und bloß sind. Das Gleichnis vom Kamel, welches eher durch ein Nadelöhr geht, als dass ein Reicher in den Himmel kommt, wird bei den westlichen Wohlstandschristen, die heute besser als Könige im Mittelalter leben und sich gerne als Vater Abrahams reiche Nachfahren ansehen, schnell verdrängt. Deutlicher kann Jesus nicht werden als zu sagen: „Siehe ich stehe an der Tür und klopfe an!“ Der Heilige Geist ist gekommen, um von Sünde zu überführen, und wir sollen heute, wenn wir seine Stimme vernehmen, unsere Herzen nicht verschließen und unsere Schuld bekennen. Der Rat vom liebevollen Herrn Jesus lautet in Feuer geläutertes Gold und weiße Kleider zu kaufen, sowie unsere Augen zu salben. Übertragen werden alle Bußfertigen geprüft, gereinigt und mit Gerechtigkeit bekleidet, so dass sie die Wahrheit erkennen und frei werden. Eine engere Gemeinschaft mit dem Erlöser gab es in den Evangelien nicht, als wie Johannes an der Brust Jesu zu liegen und das Mahl zu halten. Der große Segen heutzutage in der Kirche bedeutet die Feier des Abendmahls, bei der bewusst an den zerbrochenen Leib und das vergossene Blut auf Golgatha erinnert wird bis er wiederkommt (1. Korinther 11, 26). Die künftige Verheißung aus Matthäus 26, 29 erfüllt sich, wenn wir in aller Vertrautheit persönlich mit Jesus speisen werden und er neu mit uns vom Gewächs des Weinstocks trinken wird. Für die wahren Überwinder gibt es keinen Platz höherer Ehre, als im himmlischen Zion mit dem Sohn auf dem Thron zu sitzen, so wie er sich mit dem Vater auf seinen Thron gesetzt hat. Die ersten Christen bezahlten einen hohen Preis dafür, indem sie ihr Kreuz täglich auf sich nahmen, sich selbst verleugneten und bis aufs eigene Blut widerstanden. Auch heute steigt die Anzahl der Märtyrer wie in Nordkorea laut „Open Doors“, dem Werk für verfolgte Christen, stetig an.

Lassen sie uns die Zeichen der Zeit erkennen, denn gleich Sieben mal betont der da war und ist und kommt in der Offenbarung zu Ende eines jeden Sendschreibens: „Wer ein Ohr hat höre, was der Geist den Gemeinden sagt.“

20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

The great Old Testament prophet Isaiah, who gave the most messianic prophecies in one book, described the nature of Jesus as follows:

And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

Do we really care about what Jesus is telling through the Holy Spirit to the churches? Are we the true brethren who according to Luke 8, 21 hear his words and also practice them? The introduction to the church in Sardis is hard: “You are dead, wake up!”

Many people were baptised as a baby and became nominal Christians, but they never made an experience of the new birth described in John 3, 3. The Holy Spirit came to convict us of our sins and in accordance with Isaiah 40 the voice of one crying in the wilderness (in the form of John of the Baptist) was the forerunner for the Lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world. All flesh is like grass and all its beauty as the flower of the field. We wither and fade, but the word of the Lord stands firm in eternity. Paul adds in Romans 7, 18: “For I know that in me, that is in my flesh, dwells nothing good; for the good that I would, I do not, but the evil which I would not, that I do.”

The Christians in Sardis had a good name, but their works were not perfect. Self-righteousness and self-confidence can be fatal, because Jesus repeatedly emphasized that he comes like a thief in the night in the very moment we do not expect him. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom and the knowledge of the holy one is understanding (Proverbs 9, 10). In addition to the call to repentance, the instruction is to consider what we have received and heard, and then to retain it. Positively noted are the few names of the righteous believers who have not defiled their garments and are worth to walk in white robes. The worst fate overtakes the foolish Christians who are blotted out of the book of life, because they have not publicly confessed Jesus and didn’t care about their neighbours.

The letter to Sardis should make us said for we ourselves should feel addressed, and also there are only a few compliments.

Historically, there are again a lot of references to actual events of the Lydian capital. The Acropolis was considered as an impregnable stronghold but was still twice captured by enemies because of negligence. Sardis, the great power of Asia Minor, was famous for the first coinage, the richness of the gold-bearing river Pactolus, and for the generous king of Lydia, Croesus. Monumental buildings such as the Temple of Artemis, the Gymnasium, and the synagogue are up to this day worth a sightseeing tour.

And yet all splendour and wealth faded in the 14th century to a desolate place. Sardis was smitten 7 BC by a devastating earthquake and could only be rebuilt because of financial aid from Emperor Tiberius with his tax remission and furthermore 10,000,000 sesterces. According to Luke 16, 13 we can not serve God and mammon. Therefore, we should take care to build our house on the rock and not on sand, as well as not to throw away our faith because we then miss a great reward.

Preferably the Christians accept the message to the church of Philadelphia since it is positive and includes no rebuke. The name of the city of Philadelphia means brotherly love and is founded on the loyalty of Attalus II to his older, legitimate brother Eumenes II. Known as the gateway of the East, the Europe and Asia minor connecting city was called little Athens. But the beautiful buildings were frequently shaken by earthquakes all the same as the nearby Sardis. One similarity with the impeccable town of Smyrna were the lying Jews who were indeed serving Satan. The first letter of John describes in Chapter 4 verse 20: “If someone says he loves God, but hates his brother, then he is a liar.” In the sermon on the mount Jesus warned us to call a brother a fool, for then we shall be in danger of hell fire.

In contrast to the other Epistles, the introduction does not begin with a repetition of an attribute from the vision of chapter 1, but with him who is holy and true, and holds the key of David.

For 40 days Jesus separated himself from men before he started his public ministry. He spent this time of prayer and fasting in the desert in resisting every temptation. He is the only person without sin and wants us to follow his example of a holy life. He is the way and the truth and the life (John 14, 6), he who is truthful. Every person who claims the same of himself is a liar, thief, and ultimately ends as destroyer. After so many false saviours and Antichrists have appeared the deception always caused disappointment. The only key is Jesus, the Messiah, the son of David. His supposedly two different gender lines in the Gospels (Mary and Joseph, both descended from the tribe of Judah) is by all means one of many prophetic fulfilments of the Old Testament.

In the New Testament, the promise of opening a door refers to the proclamation of the Gospel (Colossians 4, 3 and 2 Corinthians 2, 12). The Gospel will be preached to every tribe, and tongue, and nation, and then the end will come. In the performance of this work, the Christians in Philadelphia had only a little strength and still earned the recognition to have maintained the word and not to have denied the name of Jesus. There were, and there are many obedient ambassadors of Christ who were unshaken in their trust of the invisible father in heaven without having angelic visitations, and without seeing great signs and wonders. Performing faithfully the service will help these kings to inherit the crown of life. He, who strives after God’s will and seeks the Kingdom of God is kept from the hour of trial. A well-known horror for the people from the several times renamed city of Philadelphia began again, when the earth shook strongly, so that their houses collapsed and they had to escape to the outside. What great comfort meant in this context the promise for the Christians to be a pillar in the temple, that they never had to leave again the city, and that they will get a new name in the new Jerusalem.

Remarkable at the observance of the sixth station in Asia minor is that the Christian church in Philadelphia has survived until the beginning of the 20th century. The sixth largest city in the USA got the same name as a 1682 newly founded Christian colony from the Quaker William Penn (Pennsylvania), and the Kraft brand made use of it as fresh cream cheese.

The best is saved for last, one could think, since in the beautiful Galilee, at the wedding of Cana, Jesus provided the best wine in six large vessels at the end. Also the disciples of the early church in Jerusalem had to wait until Pentecost for an unprecedented outpouring of the Spirit in the form of tongues of fire and a mighty rushing wind from heaven. Especially in lively charismatic circles it is taught that the greatest revival in human history is imminent by the spread of a global fire, because the harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few. How easy do we overlook the warning words of the eschatological discourse of Jesus in Matthew chapter 24 about deception, oppression, seduction, and falling. Also for the last church in Laodicea a warning is in the foreground. Jesus is the great word „so be it – Amen,“ the only true and faithful witness who knows the beginning and the end.

Laodicea was a sophisticated city that was famous for its banking system, the clothing industry, and an effective ointment. The natural weakness in the infrastructure consisted of an artificial water supply, because the long channels made the water gross with the time. In the figurative sense all repenting sinners will be tested, cleansed, and clothed in righteousness, so that they know the truth and will be free.

There is no closer communion with the redeemer in the Gospels as the one John had during the last supper, when he was lying at the breast of Jesus. Today, we as church, can partake in this great blessing in celebrating the memorial meal. “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” (1 Cor 11, 26). The future promise in Matthew 26, 29 is fulfilled when we personally dine in all intimacy with Jesus. Then, in his Father’s kingdom, he will drink with us again of the fruit of the vine. For the true overcomers there is no place of higher honour than to sit with Jesus on the heavenly throne of Zion, as he already sat down with the Father on his throne. The early Christians paid a high price for this promise by daily taking their cross, by denying themselves, and by resisting unto their own blood. Even today, the number of martyrs rises fast as in North Korea, according to „Open Doors“ the organisation with the mission to help worldwide persecuted Christians.
