Und dem Engel der Gemeinde in Smyrna schreibe: Das sagt der Erste und der Letzte, der tot war und wieder lebendig wurde: Ich kenne deine Drangsal und deine Armut – du bist aber reich – und die Lästerung von denen, die sagen, sie seien Juden, und sind es nicht, sondern eine Synagoge des Satans. Fürchte dich nicht vor dem, was du leiden wirst! Siehe, der Teufel wird einige von euch ins Gefängnis werfen, damit ihr geprüft werdet, und ihr werdet Bedrängnis haben zehn Tage. Sei getreu bis in den Tod! Und ich werde dir die Krone des Lebens geben. Wer Ohren hat, der höre, was der Geist den Gemeinden sagt! Wer überwindet, wird keinen Schaden erleiden von dem zweiten Tod.
Und dem Engel der Gemeinde in Pergamon schreibe: Das sagt der, der das scharfe zweischneidige Schwert hat: Ich weiß, wo du wohnst; wo der Thron des Satans ist; und du hältst an meinen Namen fest und hast den Glauben an mich nicht verleugnet, auch in den Tagen des Antipas, meines treuen Zeugen, der bei euch, wo der Satan wohnt, ermordet worden ist. Aber ich habe ein weniges gegen dich, dass du dort solche hast, welche die Lehre Bileams festhalten, der den Balak lehrte, eine Falle vor die Söhne Israels hinzustellen, so dass sie Götzenopfer aßen und Unzucht trieben. So hast auch du solche, die in gleicher Weise die Lehre der Nikolaiten festhalten. Tue Buße! Wenn aber nicht, so werde ich bald zu dir kommen und werde Krieg mit ihnen führen mit dem Schwert meines Mundes. Wer ein Ohr hat, der höre, was der Geist den Gemeinden sagt! Wer überwindet, dem will ich von dem verborgenen Manna geben und will ihm geben einen weißen Stein, und auf dem Stein geschrieben einen neuen Namen, den niemand kennt, als der, der ihn empfängt.
Und dem Engel der Gemeinde in Thyatira schreibe: Das sagt der Sohn Gottes, der Augen hat wie Feuerflammen und Füße gleich glänzendem Erz: Ich kenne deine Werke und deine Liebe und deinen Glauben und deinen Dienst und dein Ausharren und weiß, dass deine letzten Werke mehr sind als die ersten. Aber ich habe gegen dich, dass du das Weib Isebel gewähren lässt, die sich eine Prophetin nennt und meine Knechte lehrt und verführt, Unzucht zu treiben und Götzenopfer zu essen. Und ich gab ihr Zeit, damit sie Buße tue, und sie will nicht Buße tun von ihrer Unzucht. Siehe, ich werfe sie aufs Bett und die, welche Ehebruch mit ihr treiben, in große Drangsal, wenn sie nicht Buße tun von ihren Werken. Und ihre Kinder werde ich mit dem Tod schlagen, und alle Gemeinden werden erkennen, dass ich es bin, der Nieren und Herzen erforscht. Und ich werde jedem einzelnen von euch geben nach euren Werken. Euch aber sage ich, und den Übrigen in Thyatira, allen, die diese Lehre nicht haben, welche die Tiefen des Satans, wie sie es nennen, nicht erkannt haben: Ich will keine weitere Last auf euch legen. Doch was ihr habt, haltet fest, bis ich komme! Und wer überwindet und meine Werke bis ans Ende bewahrt, dem werde ich Macht über die Nationen geben. Und er wird sie hüten mit eisernem Stab, und wie Töpfergefäße wird er sie zerschmeißen, wie auch ich von meinem Vater Macht empfangen habe. Und ich werde ihm den Morgenstern geben. Wer ein Ohr hat, höre, was der Geist den Gemeinden sagt!

 

Das 2. Kapitel betont zu Beginn nochmals, dass Jesus inmitten der Gemeinde (Leuchter) wandelt und die Engel (Sterne) in seiner Vollmacht und seiner Sicherheit symbolisierenden rechten Hand hält. Seltsam mutet an, dass der Empfänger des ersten Briefes an die Gemeinde von Ephesus ein Engel ist. Bei der Auslegung der Heiligen Schrift sollte zunächst einmal immer die einfachste und naheliegendste Möglichkeit in Betracht gezogen werden. Der nächst gelegene Hafen von der Gefangeneninsel Patmos aus war Ephesus. Johannes wird die prophetischen Schreiben durch einen Boten an die jeweilige Gemeindeleiter übermittelt haben. Die logische Reihenfolge der adressierten Orte spielt sich nach der räumlich unmittelbar folgenden Wanderung durch Kleinasien im Uhrzeigersinn ab. Die Gemeinde traf sich damals in verschiedenen Privathäusern und nicht in einem großen sakralen Gebäude. Die Nennung des Namens eines Ältesten hätte aufgrund der herrschenden Verfolgung leicht zu dessen Verhaftung führen können. Die Jahrhunderte alte Überlieferung bringt die Gewissheit, dass die Sendschreiben wirklich in den 7 Gemeinden angekommen sind. Jeder Brief bezog sich also an eine spezifische örtliche Versammlung der Nachfolger Jesu in der damaligen Zeit. Die Worte sind heute genauso lebendig und wirksam für uns, wie der Engelsbote als Geistwesen nicht gestorben sein wird und seinen Dienst weiter ausführt (Hebräer 1, 14). Deshalb sollten wir das Lob Jesu und die Ermahnung auch auf unsere Kirche beziehen und gleichfalls in unserem persönlichen Leben anwenden.

Die erstaunlichste, historisch bedingte Erkenntnis über die 7 Gemeinden ist, dass jede eine Epoche im Kirchenzeitalter charakterisiert:

Über die Metropole Ephesus wird viel in der Bibel und anderen historischen Dokumenten berichtet. Der Silberschmied Demetrius löst im 19. Kapitel der Apostelgeschichte einen Aufruhr gegen Paulus aus, weil dieser sich gegen den Kult der Diana-Anbetung aussprach. Vergötterte hässliche Büsten von der vielbusigen Artemisstatue als Fruchtbarkeitssymbol finden sich heute in Museen wieder. Damals besuchten die sexgierigen Ehebrecher und Kinderschänder nicht ein modernes Flatrate-Bordell, sondern konnten ihren Gelüsten in Ephesus, unter dem Vorwand den Göttern ein Opfer zu bringen, im größten Tempel der Antike freien Lauf lassen. Auch für die römische Kaiseranbetung war die hochentwickelten Handelsstadt mit ihren Domitian- und Hadrian-Götterhäusern berühmt.

Einen religiösen Gegenpol bildeten dazu, die sich durch ihre Arbeit und Geduld auszeichnenden Christen. Sie konnten das Böse nicht ertragen, hatten die falschen Apostel identifiziert (wie Paulus in 2. Korinther 11) und hassten die Irrlehre der Nikolaiten. Trotzdem bekommen sie den Tadel, dass sie ihre erste Liebe zu ihrem Herrn Jesus Christus verlassen haben, was mich stark an das Hohelied der Liebe in 1. Korinther 13 und an die geschäftige Marta in Lukas 10, 40 erinnert. Darum sollte jeder Nachfolger Jesu wie Maria an seinen Füßen Platz nehmen, um mit den eigenen Ohren seine Stimme zu vernehmen. Am Zuverlässigsten ist dabei die persönliche Inspiration durch das Lesen seines Wortes und die genaue Prüfung der Lehren von Heilspredigern anhand der Schriften, wie es die edleren Leute aus Beröa täglich hielten (Apostelgeschichte 17, 11). Anstelle im ungesunden irdischem Eifer nach dem Unsterblichkeit versprechenden Baum der Erkenntnis des Guten und Bösen zu lüsten (Iss, du wirst bestimmt nicht sterben), bekommen die echten Überwinder als Schlusssegen die Früchte des Baumes des Lebens im Paradies Gottes zu essen.

Smyrna, die Hafenstadt mit dem größten Marktplatz der Antike, war wie Ephesus ein besonderer Ort der Götteranbetung. Bereits 195 v. Chr. bekam die heute drittgrößte Stadt der Türkei, Izmir, die zweifelhafte Ehre einen Tempel für die Beschützerin der Welt Roma zu errichten. Smyrna, das auf Griechisch Myrrhe bedeutet, bereitete den Christen durch die zertifizierte Forderung einmal im Jahr dem Kaiser zu räuchern, große Gewissenskonflikte. Die zehn Tage Bedrängnis sollten mehr symbolisch für die Einhaltung des Gesetzes, als sprichwörtlich genommen werden, da der 86-jährige Bischof Polykarp, ein Schüler des Johannes, es selbst 60 Jahre später vorzog, als mächtiger Zeuge, der seinen Herrn Jesus Christus nicht verleugnet, auf dem Scheiterhaufen verbrannt zu werden (er weigerte sich statt dessen zu bekennen, dass Cäsar der Herr ist). Eine Parallele findet sich in der babylonischen Gefangenschaft bei den drei Freunden Daniels, die ebenfalls im Feuer geprüft wurden, denn sie verbeugten sich nicht vor einer Herrscherstatue. Und die zehn Tage lange Prüfung ereignete sich bereits am Anfang des Buches Daniel mit der Bitte, Gemüse anstelle Wein und Götzenopferfleisch des Königs zu verspeisen. Die bis in den Tod getreue Gemeinde in Smyrna wurde von der jüdischen und heidnischen Bevölkerung so hart verfolgt, dass sie wegen ihres Ausharrens kein Tadel bedurfte. Die durch ihre berühmten athletischen Wettkämpfe kulturell reich gewordene stolze Stadt betrachtete die echten Gewinner der Krone des Lebens als arm und verachtete deshalb die gläubigen Überwinder, die keinen Schaden vor dem zweiten Tod nehmen. Das erinnert an die unglaubliche Geschichte über Leben und Tod, die sich im Haus der Armen Bethanien im Johannesevangelium Kapitel 11 abspielte. Lazarus war gestorben und lag vier Tage im Grab. Die schwer verständliche widersprüchliche Verheißung Jesu lautete: Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben. Wer an mich glaubt wird leben, auch wenn er stirbt (erster natürlicher Tod). Und wer da lebt und glaubt an mich wird nicht sterben in Ewigkeit (zweiter Tod – ewiges getrennt sein von Gott). Glaubst Du das? Wären wir bereit für unseren Glauben in den Tod zu gehen?

Antipas was ein solch treuer Zeuge in Pergamon der auf den steilen Stufen des Thrones des Satans ermordet worden ist. Der Pergamonaltar findet sich erstaunlicherweise heute in Berlin wieder: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pergamonaltar   

Auch wenn ich mit meiner Meinung gegen alle stehe, so würde ich die Museeumsinsel mit den Götzendenkmälern schleunigst im Meer oder sonst wo versenken. Denn seitdem der deutsche Ingenieur und Archäologe Carl Humann die weißen Marmorsteine versetzt hat, sind von unserem Regierungssitz aus zwei weniger humane Weltkriege ausgerichtet worden. Der erste Tempel in Pergamon diente dem Kaiserkult, indem Augustus verehrt wurde, aber auch für die Götter Zeus und Asklepion wurden kultische Säulendenkmäler geweiht. Dabei werden die harmlosen Schlangen im Tempel, die es nachts zu berühren galt, genauso wenig Heilkraft ausgeübt haben, wie das allseits bekannte, um den Stab windende, Symbol der Heilberufe.

Die wahre Autorität übt zu Beginn des Abschnitts, der das zweischneidige Schwert führende Herr Jesus aus. Schon einmal ist er dem ungehorsamen Propheten Bileam, dessen redende Eselin mehr Geistesunterscheidung als er selbst besaß, mit dem Schwert entgegen getreten (4. Mose 22, 23); doch dessen verführerische Ratschläge setzten nach König Balak später die Nikolaiten weiter in die Tat um. Eine erstaunliche Verwandtschaft führen auch die Wortstämme von Bileam und Nikolaos herbei, denn sowohl im Hebräischen, als auch im Griechischen bedeutet deren Namen, die über das Volk herrschen bzw. es überwältigen. Meiner Ansicht nach ist es nicht schwierig diese Kräfte historisch zu identifizieren, da sie im direkten Gegensatz zur einschärfenden Lehre von Jesus, dass der Größte im Reich Gottes seines Nächsten Diener ist, handeln, und als hochmütige, selbstsüchtige Oberhirten jegliche Eigenständigkeit der gläubigen Schäfchen unterbinden. Das Verführerische an der gnostischen Geheimlehre der Nikolaiten, vor der zum zweiten Mal gewarnt wird, war, dass im Fleisch alles erlaubt ist, da der Geist sowieso ewig lebt. So erklang eine Stimme wie im Paradies, dass wir gewiss nicht sterben werden, wenn wir gegen Gottes Wort handeln. Die sexuelle Unmoral führte bei der nach ihrem Führer Nikolaus benannten urchristlichen Sekte so weit, dass die Gläubigen ohne weiteres mit fremden Frauen Unzucht treiben konnten. „Was ist schon dabei?“, fragen sich bestimmt einige, einem Seitensprung nicht abgeneigte Leser. Schließlich bietet unser Zeitgeist einen Präsidenten beratenden anglikanischen Bischof, der in zweiter Ehe mit einem Mann verheiratet ist, und in den Schulen predigt, dass Geschlechtsverkehr für minderjährige Kinder erlaubt ist, wenn sie dabei schützend ein Kondom benützen.

Wer weise ist, ernährt sich durch die Geistesverbindung zu Jesus und durch das Meditieren über seinem Wort, mit dem in der Bundeslade verborgenen Manna, dass die größten Bibliotheken der Welt, wie in Pergamon nicht enthüllen können. Anstelle eines beschrifteten, langlebigen Pergaments aus Tierhaut bekommen die menschlichen Überwinder einmal von dem Herrn einen weißen Stein mit einem neuen Namen, den nur sie selbst kennen. Die weiße Farbe symbolisiert Reinheit und solch einen Stein bekamen auch Angeklagte im Altertum als Zeichen des Freispruchs vor Gericht.

Das längste Sendschreiben wurde an die kleinste, unbedeutendste Gemeinde in Thyatira geschrieben. Ist es nicht so, dass der Herr sagt, dass er die Schwachen und Geringen benützt, um die Starken und Großen zu Fall zu bringen (1. Korinther 1, 27)? Vergleicht man die sieben Lichter unter denen der Sohn Gottes wandelt mit der Menora, dem siebenarmigen jüdischen Leuchter, dann befindet sich das vierte Licht in der Mitte, oberhalb des langen Ständers. Kirchenhistorisch wird der in einer fruchtbaren Ebene liegende Militärstützpunkt Thyatira dem altertümlichen Wirken der katholischen Kirche zugeordnet. Der schwere Tadel für die an Werke und Liebe bekannten Christen besteht darin, dass sie das Weib Isebel gewähren lassen. Wer ist diese selbst ernannte Prophetin, die zum Verzehr von Götzenopferfleisch und zur Unzucht verleitet? Die einfachste Auslegung ist, dass es sich um die manipulierende Frau eines Gemeindeleiters handelte. Ihr herrschsüchtiges Regiment hatte wohl die selben Auswirkungen, wie bei der namensgleichen Frau Ahabs, die den gerechten Nabot durch falsche Zeugen steinigen ließ. Die böse sidonitische Prinzessin Isebel, führte die Anbetung der Himmelskönigin Aschera und von Baals-Götzen ein, indem sie behauptete alles wäre erlaubt und die zur Buße aufrufenden Propheten Israels mundtot machte. In der aufstrebenden Handelsstadt Thyatira war es in den zahlreichen Handwerksgilden üblich, sich zu verbindlichen Schutz- und Glücksgötter geweihten Mahlzeiten zu treffen. Nicht nur aufgrund des Apostelkonzils von Jerusalem (Enthaltung vom Götzenopferfleisch, Unzucht, Ersticktem und Blut in Apostelgeschichte 15, 29) war dies verboten; aber was tut der nach Geschäftsvorteilen strebende Christ nicht alles, um heidnisches Brauchtum zu erhalten. Am Ende wartet der Tod, für die Tiefen des Satans erkennenden unbußfertigen Ehebrecher, nachdem sie mit Isebel aufs Krankenbett geworfen wurden. Es ist töricht zu glauben, der liebe Gott schaue teilnahmslos unserem Treiben auf der Erde zu und schenke uns als Richter der Menschheit aufgrund der Gebete von Heiligen ein gnädiges Urteil. Nein, er hat Augen wie Feuerflammen, die uns auf Herz und Nieren prüfen und wehe all denen, die den Sohn Gottes verleugnen und sein unerwartetes Kommen mit den Füßen aus glühendem Erz am eigenen Leib verspüren. Lydia, die aus Thyatira stammende Purpurkrämerin, traf nach der Begegnung mit Paulus am Flussufer vor der römischen Kolonie Philippi die richtige Entscheidung für den König aller Könige. Die den Sohn küssende Überwinderin bekam gemäß der Verheißung aus dem zweiten Psalm Macht über Nationen, um sie zu hüten mit eisernem Stab und wie Töpfergeschirr zu zerschmeißen. Dessen ungeachtet sind ihre teuren Königsgewänder tragenden Klienten bezeichnenderweise gegen den Herrn und seinen Gesalbten aufgetreten.

Am Ende der Nacht geht der erste Stern am Morgenhorizont für alle die auf, die hören was der Geist den Gemeinden sagt. Darum werden sie nicht Müde, die Offenbarung weiter zu studieren.

22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.

27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.

At the beginning, the second chapter emphasizes again that Jesus walks in the midst of the churches (candlesticks) and that he holds the angels (stars) in his authority and his security symbolizing right hand. Strangely seems that the recipient of the first letter is an angel of the church of Ephesus. In the interpretation of scripture should first the easiest and most straightforward way be considered. The nearest port of the prison island of Patmos was Ephesus. John would have sent the prophetic letter by courier to the respective elders of the churches. The logical order of the addressed locations takes place after the clockwise walk through Asia Minor. The congregation met at that time in various private homes and not in a large sacral building. The naming of an elder could easily have let to his imprisonment due to the prevailing persecution. Each letter is referring to a specific local assembly of followers of Jesus at that time. For us today, the old words are just as lively and effective, as well as the angel messenger will not have died, since God’s spirit beings continue to perform their service (Hebrews 1, 14). Therefore, we should apply the praise of Jesus and his exhortation also in our church and in our personal lives.

In the Bible and other historical documents is reported about the metropolis of Ephesus. The silversmith Demetrius rose an uproar against Paul in the 19th chapter of the Acts of the Apostles because Paul had spoken against the cult of the worship of Diana. Idolised ugly busts of the multi-breast Artemis statue as symbol of fertility can still be viewed in numerous museums. At former times the sex addicted adulterers and child molesters did not visit a swinger club or flat rate brothel, but they could unleash their fleshly desires in the biggest temple of ancient times, to allege as a pretext that they make a sacrifice to God. The sophisticated city was also famous for the Roman Emperor worship with its Domitian and Hadrian temples.

A religious counterpoint formed the hard working, uncomplaining Christians. They could not endure the evil, had identified the false apostles (like Paul in 2. Corinthians 11), and hated the false doctrine of the Nicolaitans. Nevertheless, they get the blame that they have left their first love for the Lord Jesus Christ, which reminds me strongly of the love chapter in 1. Corinthians 13 and of busy Martha in Luke 10, 40. Thus, any follower of Jesus should sit down at his feet to hear the voice of the master with the own ears. Thereby, the personal inspiration through reading his word and the detailed examination of the teachings of preachers on the basis of the scriptures is most reliable, as the noble people of Berea daily practised (Acts 17, 11). Instead of the unhealthy earthly zeal to lust after the immortality promising tree of knowledge of good and evil (eat, you shall surely not die), the true overcomers receive as final blessing to eat from the fruit of the tree of life in the paradise of God.
